Este fin de semana pasado me contactaron para hacerle las fotos a un proyecto que me pareció sumamente interesante. Querían recrear una carrera de los años 50´s utilizando las motos de carrera que se usaban en ese entonces. Estas motos han sido trabajadas y restauradas, por lo cual son perfectas para este video. Así que PactoHelmets, una empresa coostarricense que hace cascos, guantes y accesorios para mantener esa línea retro decidió hacer el video para representar lo que era una carrera del estilo.

This past weekend I was hired to do the photos for a project I found incredibly interesting. The customers wanted to recreate a 50’s bike race using the outfit and bikes that they used at that moment. Those bikes have been refurbished. Therefore they are in perfect shape and can be used for the purpose of the video. That´s why PactoHelmets, a Costa Rican brand that makes helmets, gloves and other accessories to maintain that retro lifestyle alive, decided to make a video to represent what was like to be in a race like that one.

Está en algún lugar de mi ser el pensar que algún día tendré una moto como estas, porque me imagino como en una película en donde siempre el personaje principal anda en una. Algún día haré la fantasía real, aunque por otro lado no me hace falta. Más y aún dejando al héroe de las películas de lado, me encanta el sentimiento y el estilo que se trae de estos tiempos. La forma en la que visten, la cultura y pensamientos que movían a estas personas cuando iba a comenzar una carrera, es súmamente interesante.

I’ve always had that feeling of getting one of these bikes because I picture myself in a movie where the main character is always the bike rider. One day i’ll make that come true, although I don’t feel like I really NEED to. Keeping that ‘hero’ story for another post, I love the feeling and style that has been brought from these times. The way they are dressed, the culture and thoughts that moved these people before each race is very interesting.

El escenario es perfecto; una casa de 70 años en Cartago con camiones restaurados como pocos acá en Costa Rica, un taller, y una calle de lastre. Es súmamente importante intentar demostrar en las fotos aquél sentimiento de competitividad que se generaba en las carreras, la rivalidad entre competidores y ese ambiente de ´yo voy a llegar primero, pase lo que pase´. Por eso intenté recrear una discusión entre rivales para una de las partes de las fotos como si ellos estuvieran teniendo roces sobre la carrera.

The scenery is perfect; a 70 year old house in Cartago, restored trucks that are not common in Costa Rica, a warehouse, and a dusty road. It’s imperative to demonstrate though images that feeling of competition that was generated at each race, the rivalry between competitors and that mood of ‘I will come up first, nothing more, nothing less’. That´s why I tried to recreate those discussions between competitors as part of the images as if they were arguing.

Después fue la escena del taller, en donde el mecánico trabaja con las motos y se pintan los números para ´comenzar la carrera´. En este momento se muestra mucha interacción entre los ´competidores´, dejando claro que están listos para el comienzo.

After that we had the warehouse/workshop scene, where the mechanic refilled gas and they painted the numbers on each bike before starting the race. At that moment the competitors had a lot of interaction with each other because the race was about to start.

El sol estaba realmente fuerte y eso hacía algunos picos en las luces altas, más no hacía que la fotografía se perdiera. Siempre intenté hacer notar la calidad de los accesorios y cómo los vestían personas. Ese sentir que son parte de la escena, que hacen ese ´plus´ necesario.

Una vez terminada esta escena nos pasamos a la final, el comienzo de la carrera.

The Sun was really warm and that made the highlights on the images pop up, either way, that did´t make the images be faulty, instead helped out. I always tried to portray on the images the quality of products and accessories that they were wearing. That feeling that each accessory was necessary made a ‘plus to the images’.

Once that scene was done, we passed onto the final: “The race started.”

No puedo estar más contento con el hecho de haber sido parte de este proyecto. Me encantan los escenarios, me encantan las motos y me encanto poder ser parte de la recreación de este evento. Agradezco de enorme manera a PactoHelmets por dejarme ser parte del trabajo y confiar en lo que hago.

I couldn’t be happier to have been part of this project. I loved the scenery, the bikes and also the fact that I was part of the recreation of an event that is not normaly seen. I am very grateful of PactoHelmets for letting me be part of this  and trusting the work I do.
