Kiwanda Maji, traducido del Swahili a ‘Fabrica de Agua’ en español, es mucho más que eso. Como parte del Grupo Mawamba, esta finca ubicada a una hora de Liberia, del costado de Upala del Rincón de la Vieja, es un lugar totalmente fuera de lo común. Esta finca autosostenible tiene cerdos, vacas, gallinas, burros, y cabras, y, además de variedad de frutos, increíbles catratas. Dado que está tan cerca del volcán Rincón de la Vieja, el rio que pasa por la propiedad es turquesa, el cual se aprovecha para llenar la piscina natural que se encuentra en el área social.
“Kiwanda Maji” -translated from the Swahili language to ‘Water Factory’ in english, is a lot more than just that. Part of Grupo Mawamba, this farm is located about an hour from Liberia, Guanacaste, on the side of Upala of the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, is a totally different type of farm. The farm has cows, hens, donkeys, goats, and a variety of fruits, and amazing waterfalls! Given that the farm is not far from the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, the river that flows near the property is turquoise, which is used to fill up the natural pool just beside the common area.
Estuve 4 días en Kiwanda y pude recorrer grán parte de la propiedad, aunque todavía me quedaron lugares por explorar. El ambiente también cambia muy rápido y hace del espacio otro ambiente totalmente diferente.
I was 4 days at Kiwanda and could walk a big part of the property, though there were many places I still have to discover. The weather changes very fast so it’s not easy to know if it’s going to rain and your camera might suffer the consequences!
Dado que yo estuve haciéndole fotografía a la finca y al evento que tuvieron, pude acompañar en los dos días que estuvieron los tours a quienes caminaban por la finca y vi cómo disfrutaban los turistas interactuando con las vacas y demás animales. ¡Es una experiencia realmente única para quienes no tienen oportunidad de ver estos animales cara a cara! Sólo con el hecho de poder ordeñar una vaca con sus propias manos es una experiencia que los deja con una sonrisa de lado a lado de la cara.
Given that I was taking pictures for the farm and the event that was taking place at the moment, I could accompany both tours who made the tour throughout the property and saw how everyone interacted with the cows and other animals. It’s a totally unique experience for those who haven’t had the opportunity to be with these animals face to face! Only the fact that you can actually milk a cow and drink the milk just out, is a unique experience that makes everyone smile!
La comida que se ofrece también es de enorme calidad. Desde la variedad de quesos que se producen ahí mismo con chipotle, jalea o especies, hasta las especialidades del chef o el buffete de cómo prepararse uno mismo el tradicional chifrijo.
The food that is served at the restaurant is also out of this world. From the variety of cheese that they produce with chipotle, jelly or condiment, to the chef’s specials and the buffet to make your own ‘chifrijo’.
Hay muchísimo qué hacer en la finca para pasar el día o simplemente relajarse. Bañarse en el agua fria y turquesa de la piscina natural y andar en Kayak es muy tranquilizante.
There’s a lot to do at the farm than just simply relax! You can take a bath at the turquoise cold, natural pool or kayak too!

El proyecto sigue creciendo y tiene un potencial enorme para ser un destino que poco a poco va a ser un ´must´ para nosotros los ticos y para el extranjero. Para mi, por lo menos, fue una experiencia súmamente enriquecedora conocer a tantas personas, tanto a los extranjeros que venían a conocer como a las personas que están en el proyecto.

This project is still growing and has a huge potential! I think it’s a ‘must’ destination for us locals and for everyone visiting Costa Rica. At least for me, it was a very enriching experience to meet so many people, from visitors to those amazing people who work there and keep making this place awesome.
